This is exactly what happened to Cap’n Josh more than a hundred years ago. One restless night, he came up with an idea for a product that would change his future forever. At that time, people either used grass-filled mattresses or hammocks. Since the former wasn’t giving him desired results, he opted for the second, but found that the available hammocks on the market were lacking in comfort. After experimenting with different kinds of materials and construction, his luck finally turned around when he discovered that cotton ropes were best for hammocks, along with the use of a special weave and a spreader bar. His design became the very foundation of Pawley's Island that founded in 1935, which he named as The Original Hammocks.

Pawley's Island hammocks are recognized as the original hammock brand, but just like any other great product, copycats tried to reproduce the Cap’n Josh touch into their own line of hammocks, but nothing was able to beat the original.
