Before You Buy Square Rugs

Square rugs come in a multitude of materials and designs, so you can find one to go with any decorating scheme. Do not rush into your purchase though, because you need to find the appropriate size. The smallest square rug measures 1’ 6”, and the largest available at LuxeDecor measures 8’ by 8’. Decorating with square rugs does not have to be complicated.

First, measure the room and the area in which you want to use the carpet. Square rugs typically sit beneath a table to help ground the space. Interior decorators recommend that you leave 24 inches on each side of the table for the rug area. This space lets guests have ample room to pull out the chairs without the back legs leaving the carpet. At least eight inches of the rug space should separate the wall from the rug’s edge.

Arrange your furniture first. Using painter’s tape, mark off the square where the rug will go. This lets you determine what size square rug fits your space. Remember that in most cases you will need to use whole feet, i.e., four, five, six, etc. These rugs come in standardized sizes. For an odd-sized space, use carpet squares to construct the ideal-sized rug.

Types of Square Rugs

Choose from four main types of square shaped carpets at LuxeDecor. These types refer to the method of manufacture of the rug:

• Braided - These rugs may be handmade, or machine made. Either way, the rug consists of plaited fabric strips sewn together.
• Flatweave - The term flatweave refers to a rug or flat woven design with a decorative pattern fabricated by interlacing vertical warp threads with horizontal weft threads common in tribal designs. This creates a no-pile carpet that uses no knots.
• Handmade - These hand woven rugs prove the most expensive. When you read the term hand tied or hand knotted, this also refers to handmade carpets.
• Machine Made - Machine made rugs are mass manufactured on power looms. These cost less, but do not have the small inconsistencies with which that handmade carpet weavers “sign” their creations.

How to Choose Square Rugs

Consider the fabric you want to feel underfoot. These square rugs offer many choices from natural fibers like silk, jute, and bamboo to the durability of synthetic material or rugs that use a mix of natural and synthetic materials. Other fabric options include cotton, leather, sheepskin, sisal, and wool. The most common material for rugs, wool, costs the most but feels soft under your feet and helps keep your home warm in winter.

Some square rugs you can use outdoors, including some of the jute rugs. You should only use silk rugs indoors, though, because this material cannot handle wet conditions well. It will water stain.

What type of décor you use also contributes to your choice, as do your room colors and shape. Avoid using a square rug in an L-shaped or T-shaped room or space. These work best in a square room or a large rectangular room. Match the colors of the rug to the main wall color or that of the focal furniture pieces of the room.

While a contrasting color may seem daring, if you have no existing use of the color in the room, it will seem out of place. Also, consider your decorating motif.
