Henkel Harris, described as “America’s finest furniture,” was born when husband and wife duo, Carroll and Mary Henkel, decided to launch their own furniture business after Carroll served in the World War II. Inexperienced with the craft, they decided to enlist the help of a friend, John Harris, into their new business venture. In 1946, the Henkels officially started operation in a rented building. Many hours were spent in trying to recreate antique furniture pieces. To supplement their income, the couple decided to accept repair works. The Henkels used this sideline work to perfect finishing techniques, as well study the craftsmanship of the antique pieces that they loved. Countless repairs later, the couple was able to come up with the renowned “Henkel Harris finish,” which is still being used today because of the clarity, durability, and overall quality that it offers. In 1956, John Harris left the company and pursued other ventures. With very little capital to keep the business running, Carroll and Mary devised a way to make their partnership work. While Carroll would travel across Virginia, attempting to sell furniture to potential customers, Mary managed the plant in Winchester in his absence. Through unwavering persistence, they slowly grew the company, allowing them to have a bigger factory in 1963. Carroll passed away in 1969, leaving Mary on her own. At that time, the industry was mostly run by male entrepreneurs. Mary took on the challenge anyway and grew the company quickly after Carroll’s death. She also invested in the betterment of her employees, encouraging them to get educated and paid for their tuition fees. Her advocacy for education was extended to Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown, Virginia, where she donated thousands of dollars. The company was acquired by the Gum family in 2013, and under this family’s direction the legacy built by its previous owners continues.
