Panels or boards are placed underneath the mattress and box springs. The mattress can’t slide off or move around much when fitted to the bed frame properly.
Platform beds are sturdy bases on which a mattress is placed. You don’t need a box spring with this type of bed, and most don’t have footboards. Simple platforms may not even have a headboard.
